Mark L. Emerson: The Shape of Rhythm

September 10 through October 25, 2014

Second Saturday Reception on September 13, 6 to 8 pm
Live Music by Scott Collard Trio

Emerson is a Sacramento favorite, at least for those of us drawn to abstraction with color as the dominate vocabulary, and its mysterious attributes, as a primary motive. A master at making paint shift and vibrate in his well-planned rectangles, Emerson once again displays his ability in these new paintings on canvas and paper! This new body of work is challenging, while seducing us with combinations of tone that are dissonant and then they turn and please with resolve. We often talk of Modern Masters, referring to Picasso, Matisse, etc. In years to come, Mark Emerson will be thought of as one of Sacramento’s own Modern Masters. (That is our opinion, but you can quote us if you want.) Emerson received his MFA from UC Davis, and his work is found in collections locally, including the Crocker Museum; American River College; Sacramento City College; Kaiser Permanente; University California Davis Medical Center, among others. While we show Mark Emerson at JAYJAY, he will also be showing at the Pence Gallery in Davis, Sept. 30 – Nov. 9, with a reception on Friday, Oct. 10 from 6-9 PM.
