Women Under the Influence

June 6 through July 28, 2012

Conversations in paint with Jane Callister, Wendy Kveck and Mary Warner

JAYJAY celebrates the hot temperatures of summer with an equally hot exhibit featuring three women artists who share similar interests in the sensuous and luxurious medium of paint. This is also an opportunity to explore the effects of inspiration, mentoring, and influence among artists who share and critique each other’s work.  Both Wendy Kveck and Jane Callister received their MFA degrees at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas, where they studied with Mary Warner. Callister now teaches at UC Santa Barbara and Kveck is an instructor at University Nevada at Las Vegas. Callister shows often in Los Angeles and Santa Barbara with exhibitions to note such as the 2006 California Biennial at the Orange County Museum of Art and “Step into Liquid” at Otis Art School, curated by esteemed art historian and curator, Dave Hickey. Kveck was included in the 2011 International Art + Design Exhibition at Daigu University in South Korea and Aqua Art Miami, 2011.

Mary Warner is a Sacramento favorite, having received her MA at CSU Sacramento in 1974, and shown many times over the last three decades at Jennifer Pauls Gallery and JAYJAY, as well as the Center for Contemporary Art, Sacramento.  We are so glad to welcome her back as she has chosen Sacramento as her permanent residence following her retirement from the art faculty at UNLV.

Her public exhibitions of note include the nationally recognized art curator and critic Dave Hickey’s unique traveling exhibition, “Ultralounge”, as well as “Sexy” Sensual Abstraction in California at the Armory Art Center, Pasadena, CA and the Temporary Contemporary in Las Vegas.  Public collections include: CSU Sacramento; Crocker Art Museum; CSUS College of Continuing Education; University of California, Davis Medical Center; Kaiser Permanente, Sacramento;  Pillsbury Corporation, St. Paul, MN; Byer Museum, Evanston, IL; Prudential Corporation; Marietta Cobb Museum, Marietta, GA; Chase Manhattan Bank, NYC; United Bank of Denver; McCarran Airport, Las Vegas, NV.
