David Wetzl: A Tribute to Genius-im

February 1 – March 1, 2014

Opening Reception: Saturday, February 8, 6 to 8:30 pm

JAYJAY is taking the month of February to honor one of the region’s finest post-modern artists. David Wetzl is leaving academia, CSU Sacramento and Sierra College, where he has influenced and challenged art sudents for two decades, to explore and expand his studio practice without distraction. Wetzl was recently diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia, and though he took incredible pride in teaching and mentoring students, he has chosen to concentrate on his own work during this time.

This exhibit celebrates his retirement by including a survey of work that spans twenty plus years, including never before seen drawings from the early 90’s, a selection of work from private collections, available recent works, and a grand new painting which indicates that Wetzl is entering a phenomenal period of creativity.

Wetzl has been well collected privately and publicly in the region, and currently on view at the Crocker Art Museum is this monumental work,
