New Work by Julia Couzens

September 7 through October 28, 2017
Opening Reception: Thursday, September 14th from 5 to 7pm

Gallery hours:  Wed – Saturday 11 to 4 and by appointment

Julia Couzens’ ontological approach to creation is one that finds her working from the inside out as the catalyst for her work is internal logic and experience. Couzens’ initial approach to her work is drawn from a frantic amalgamation of drawing, painting, assemblage, and sculpture. Her work is a complex paradox that is a convulsive and fitful experience tangled up in sudden bursts of pure energy and feeling. These new mixed media constructions are a contemplative introspection into the tenderness of being and existence; a documentation of what it means to be alive.

Couzens received her MFA from UC Davis. Her work is widely collected nationally and internationally by several private and public collections including the Yale University Art Gallery, Syntex Corporation of Palo Alto, Oakland Museum, Hewlett Packard in Ireland, Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art, Crocker Art Museum, The Frederick Weisman Collection in Los Angeles, and many more. Couzens has been the recipient of several awards including a visual arts fellowship from The Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation in New York, NY.
