Artist Statement

Although I don’t consider myself a photographer per se, I usually begin my work shooting 4″ x 5″ sheet film in a 1940’s-era Graflex camera with a Polaroid back. Occasionally, I’ll begin a work using found materials-I maintain a constant studio supply of found photos and objects.

I alter the color and texture of the photographs with sandpaper and steel wool, then paint and draw on the altered photos. Found images and objects, acetate, lead, etc. are woven into the final assemblage.

Currently I’m attracted to figurative work-especially the female form, strange landscapes and Islamic decorative patterning. I’d like my work to evoke a sense of “mysterious narrative”.
