Richard Martinez: Pattern, Shape, Color

June 14 through July 26, 2014

Second Saturday Reception on June 14, 6 to 8 pm
Live Jazz and Drewski’s Hot Rod Kitchen!

JAYJAY is committed to the artist’s hand. We love painting! In this new body of paintings, Richard Martinez continues to refer to an interest in baroque decorative shapes and modernist painting techniques and movements. The artist hand is prominent as Martinez employs an approach to paint that celebrates the medium abstractly. “Overall in these paintings there is a theme of mixing types of visual language together.  References to the baroque, as well as modernist work of the 50s and 60s seem to happen regularly.” He is and Assistant Professor of art at Whitman College, Walla Walla, WA.

Martinez received his MFA at UC Davis in 2001. He has just finished a one person exhibition at Texas State University, and was also included in the Oregon Biennial (2001) at the Portland Art Museum, and the Texas Biennial (2005 and 2011) in Austin, TX. He has exhibited at The Blue Star Contemporary Art Center, San Antonio, and the New Braunfels Museum of Art And Music, New Braunfels, Texas.
