Mark L. Emerson: The Color of Rhythm

May 11 – June 25, 2011

Mark Emerson is a Sacramento favorite, at least for those of us drawn to abstraction with color, and its mysterious attributes, as a primary motive. A master at making paint shift and vibrate in his well-planned rectangles, which are most often squares, Emerson once again displays his virtuosity in these new paintings on panel, canvas and paper! The show title The Color of Rhythm refers to Mark’s love of jazz and how the music correlates with the paintings he makes; the colors moving slowly and then fast and in patterns. This new body of work is challenging—just like a modern jazz tune can be. They sometimes border on being too active, too bright, while seducing us with combinations of tone that are dissident and then they turn and please with resolve.
